It’s been 4 years since I last decided to grow a moustache for Movember, but I have decided once again to participate for this year. I always do it if other people at work are growing a moustache as well and this year it has been organized through some people at work. What I find is that it’s fun for about 2 weeks and then it gets very annoying but overall it is for a good cause.
The idea of Movember originally started 13 years ago and was set up to raise money for prostate and testicular cancer awareness which kills thousands of young men every year. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men aged 24 to 40 and prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide. Throughout the years the Movember foundation has raised millions of dollars to raise awareness and invest in detection and prevention programs. Since then they have expanded to incorporate mental health issues which is a growing concern for young men worldwide.
I am proud to participate for all these good causes and all I have to do is grow a moustache for a month. Luckily I find growing hair very easy and over the years my moustaches have been quite spectacular. This year I will go for a 1970’s style handlebar moustache, I look forward to seeing how my work colleagues plan to sculpt their facial hair.
The Movember foundation have certainly raised awareness over the years about something that nobody was talking about. Testicular cancer and prostate cancer was virtually unknown 15 years ago but with the help of the Movember foundation the media have picked up on it and people are more aware than ever of how to detect the early signs, which can only be a good thing.
